Inside the Dubai Marina Campaign: Director Shane Stephen Vessaokar on Crafting His Standout Director’s Cut

Published

Bringing a branded film to life is rarely as simple as following a brief — and in the case of the Rove Home Dubai Marina project, the story behind the camera is just as compelling as the final cut. Freelance Director Shane Stephen Vessaokar took a fast-paced commercial assignment and transformed it into a visually rich, narrative-driven director’s cut that eventually caught Creativepool’s attention. With a shifting brief, unfinished locations, and a launch deadline sprint, the production demanded both agility and creative reinvention.

In this interview, Shane breaks down the full filmmaking journey — from the early pitch challenges and multi-location production hurdles to the unexpected moment that sparked a brand-new narrative for his personal cut. For anyone interested in commercial film production, creative direction, or the craft behind premium Dubai Marina lifestyle campaigns, this is an inside look at how an ambitious project evolved into a standout piece of creative work.

What was the brief?

*
In all honesty, the film that got featured on Creativepool is my director’s cut, which differs significantly from the final version delivered to the client for their project's launch. The clientele film was a fast-paced, stylised campaign with dynamic camera movements. Since the project's initial brief, there have been quite a few changes, including an activation during the launch featuring skydivers, intended to serve as the film's opening, that was shelved a few days before production. The core aim was to showcase the amenities offered by Rove Home Dubai Marina.

How did the initial pitch/brainstorming phase go?

The process was straightforward because both the agency and the client had clear goals. The initial brainstorming was challenging due to numerous changes in the early stages. However, once everything was clarified, we focused on selecting locations that matched the property, which was still not ready. We had several options, initially scattered amidst the Rove properties and located far apart, and we needed to complete all shots in a single day to stay within budget.

What was the process behind ideating the concept?

The advertising agency, with client approvals, developed the concept to emphasise the property's lifestyle and features.

What was the production process like?

*
It was hectic because we got approval for the project while I was working on another project in Egypt. As soon as I returned to Dubai, we immediately started working. We needed a quick turnaround because we were preparing for a launch event where the film would be showcased. Everyone had to quickly organise and collaborate, knowing it would be challenging.

What was the biggest challenge during production? How did you overcome it?

As mentioned earlier, the brief was straightforward but required creativity, as we needed to film and highlight amenities that weren’t yet ready, which was the main challenge. Identifying appropriate locations within the Rove properties was tough because they were dispersed across seven sites, requiring the entire filming crew to move repeatedly. Nonetheless, with a well-planned production, determination, a committed production team, and the never-ending support of the agency & clientele, everything ultimately fell into place seamlessly.

What kit/tools/software were used to create the project?

This project didn't require anything extraordinary. We used a Mini-Alexa with Canon FD lenses. However, had requested an Alexa Trinity to be available on set, primarily to save time and work more efficiently while managing multiple locations. The editing was done in Adobe Premiere Pro, and the colour grading was completed in Da Vinci Resolve.

What is one funny or notable thing that happened during production?

*
This is something I will never forget and will stay with me forever. I had planned to shoot everything on this project at 50 fps to adjust the speed of shots during editing, speeding up or slowing down to emphasise key moments. Once I overheard an agency personnel say that everything looks great at 50 fps, which sparked the realisation that I really do have some gorgeous shots. This gave me the opportunity to craft a narrative campaign for my director’s cut, something I had long desired but hadn't had the chance to do because most of my jobs involved quick-paced, stylised commercials. Thanks to my EP, after delivering the final client version, I edited my own scripted director’s cut, and the rest is history. The director’s cut was featured by Creativepool.

What’s the main message of this project and why does it matter?

Dubai Marina is supposed to be one of the best hubs in the U.A.E. for a lavish lifestyle, and the project we were filming was to be built on the last available slice of property.

How long did it take from inception to delivery?

I assume a month, if I am not mistaken.

Can you describe the creative spark or inspiration behind the initial concept? Was there a specific moment or insight that ignited the idea?

*
Regarding the Director’s cut featured on Creativepool, I've already shared the moment that will stay with me forever. Sometimes, you discover new potential in your work, leading you to write a new script and re-edit the entire project. This was one of those occasions. I'm thankful to everyone involved, primarily my Executive Producer Ajmal P, who supported me throughout.

How did you ensure that the concept aligned with the brand's values, goals, and target audience?

The agency and clientele were all on board with every decision to ensure we aligned with the brand values, from the locations being used to the wardrobe styling to the colours and production design. Regarding the goals and target audience, it was intended for use at the launch event, and it served its purpose well.
