How The Gate Repositioned Door Drops with a Silicon Valley-Inspired Campaign for Marketreach

Published

Marketing channels often suffer from outdated perceptions, and few have been as misunderstood as door drops. Long associated with unsolicited leaflets and low-value promotions, the medium is frequently overlooked by marketers despite its proven effectiveness. In this edition of Creativepool's Behind the Idea, we speak with The Gate about the thinking behind their campaign for Marketreach, which set out to challenge these assumptions and encourage brands to reconsider door drops as a high-performing marketing channel.

Rather than defending the medium with statistics alone, the team reimagined door drops as if they were the latest breakthrough from Silicon Valley turning a familiar marketing tool into the star of a modern tech product launch. From the initial creative spark and collaborative ideation process to the innovative use of AI and CGI in production, the team shares how a simple shift in perspective became the foundation for a campaign that is already changing how marketers view one of the industry's oldest channels.

What was the brief?

Our brief was to drive consideration and evaluation of marketing door drops through a multi-channel campaign. The brief challenged a common (and stubborn) misconception that door drops are junk mail, unsuitable for top brands. We were targeting CMOs and marketing departments and needed them to approach door drops with genuine openness – backed by the news that 70% of the UK’s top brands had already made that choice.

How did the initial pitch/brainstorming phase go?

*At first it was hard to get over the fact that, yes, door drops can easily be construed as throwaway pieces of paper. Often they come in the shape of local businesses and on very cheap stock.

But once we read and researched Marketreach’s collateral, we saw how multinationals use them and that they get massive results. This was a hard ask… but talking together with Stephen and the team, we ended on a few focus areas:  ‘Celebration’, ‘Tangibility’, ‘Reality/Realisation’, and ‘This is not new’, along with a pun about ‘Dropping something’.  We realised that door drop’s tangibility and the fact that brands get into people’s hands is a massive selling point. It’s not on a screen. It can’t be skipped.

What was the process behind ideating the concept?

If door drops were launched today, in Silicon Valley, people would go crazy for them. But, as they’re not the newest latest tech, they don’t get the airtime. What if we re-launched them like a brand new tech product?

What kit/tools/software were used to create the project?

For AI we used Nana Banana pro + Luma Modify. For comp work we used AE, and for CG elements we used Cinema 4D and Octane Renderer.

What’s the main message of this project and why does it matter?

*The main message is all about how simple door drops are to get brands in hands. And how in the marketing mix, they are a viable channel for big as well as small businesses. The ROI speaks for itself. The reason for the campaign was to get CMOs / marketing departments to re-evaluate door drops and consider them moreso.

Can you describe the creative spark or inspiration behind the initial concept? Was there a specific moment or insight that ignited the idea?

It originally came from a line we wrote: ‘The future is already here’ – in a twilight zone style area, then we spun it using wit and built out a full tech launch as a vehicle.

Were there any alternative concepts or ideas considered during the ideation phase? If so, what led to the selection of the final concept?

There were many. A rapper waxing lyrical about Door Drops. A ticker-tape style celebration of all things card/paper and more. One thing about working with something as simple as a piece of paper is that there’s a world of creative possibility. Ultimately, we loved the contrast of the Silicon Valley-style campaign with the simplicity of door drops as a tool, and the way both are laser focused on performance.

Can you discuss any collaborative or interdisciplinary aspects of the ideation process, such as working with other departments or external partners?

*It was excellent and informative to work with M3 Labs, understanding the parameters of AI and how it could be incorporated into the process.

Can you discuss any unique or unconventional production techniques or approaches used to bring the idea to life?

We used AI for the crowd to save on cost with a great result.

How did you ensure that the concept remained innovative and stood out in a crowded marketplace?

We try and do that with everything we do.

What do you hope it achieves for the brand?

*We’ve seen an incredible response from brands and businesses who are viewing door drops in a completely different light now. They love the fact that by simply flipping the perspective on door drop’s impressive stats and capabilities people are considering them in their marketing mix again. The goal was changing perspectives, we’ve already started doing that and hope it continues to raise consideration of the channel.
