Gas Lamp Founder Scott Miller on Authentic Storytelling, Creative Growth, and the Future of Brand Filmmaking

Published

In an industry increasingly driven by speed, algorithms, and endless content creation, Gas Lamp has built its reputation on something far more enduring: authentic storytelling. Founded by Scott Miller, Executive Producer and creative leader, the Los Angeles-based production company has carved out a unique space by blending cinematic craftsmanship with emotionally resonant brand narratives. Through a commitment to collaboration, creative integrity, and meaningful partnerships, Gas Lamp continues to create work that connects deeply with audiences and clients alike.

In this interview, Scott Miller shares the story behind Gas Lamp’s journey, the challenges of scaling a creative business without losing its identity, and the opportunities shaping the future of commercial production. From fostering innovation and diversity to navigating industry changes and emerging technologies, he offers valuable insights into building a purpose-driven creative company while staying true to the fundamentals of great storytelling.

How was your company born and where are you based?

*Gas Lamp was born out of a desire to create work that felt more human, cinematic, and emotionally honest. After years of working within the agency world, I saw an opportunity to build a company that prioritized craft, collaboration, and storytelling over volume. We wanted to create an environment where creative partners and clients felt like they were building something together, not just moving through a production pipeline. We are based in Los Angeles, CA with resources across the globe, allowing us to stay connected to both major commercial markets and authentic real-world stories.

What was the biggest challenge to the growth of your company?

One of the biggest challenges was learning how to scale without losing the identity of the company. In production, it’s easy to get pulled toward quantity and speed, but we’ve always believed the value is in the details, the relationships, and the creative integrity of the work. Finding the right collaborators and clients who align with that philosophy was critical. Growth for us has been very intentional.

Which was the first huge success that you can remember?

The first major turning point was when clients started coming back not just because they liked the final product, but because they genuinely trusted the process. That repeat trust validated what we were building. Creatively, seeing our work resonate emotionally with audiences and generate real engagement for brands was a huge milestone.

What’s the biggest opportunity for you and your company in the next year?

*The biggest opportunity is continuing to bridge cinematic storytelling with modern brand communication. Audiences are becoming more selective and more emotionally aware of what feels authentic. Brands that are willing to embrace vulnerability, humanity, and real storytelling have an incredible opportunity right now, and that’s exactly where we thrive.

Can you explain your team’s creative process? What makes it unique?

Our process starts with listening. We spend a lot of time understanding the emotional core of a story before we ever talk about cameras or production. From there, we build collaboratively with directors, editors, composers, and clients all contributing creatively early in the process. What makes us unique is that we approach commercial work with the same emotional intention and cinematic discipline as narrative filmmaking. We’re less interested in “content” and more interested in creating moments people actually remember.

How does your team remain inspired and motivated?

Curiosity is a huge part of our culture. We pull inspiration from film, music, photography, design, architecture, and real life experiences. We also try to protect creative energy by working with people who genuinely love the process. When everyone feels ownership over the work, motivation becomes natural.

How has COVID-19 affected your company?

*COVID forced the industry to become more agile and rethink traditional production models. While it was obviously a difficult period for everyone, it also reinforced the importance of adaptability, smaller crews, remote collaboration, and authentic storytelling. It pushed us to become more resourceful and more intentional about the projects we pursued.

What is one tip that you would give to other agencies looking to grow?

Protect your identity early. It’s easy to chase trends or say yes to everything, but long-term growth comes from being known for something specific and meaningful. Clients remember clarity and authenticity.

How do you go about finding new clients/business? (Pitching, work with retainers, etc.)

Most of our growth has come through relationships, referrals, and repeat collaborations. We approach new business more like creative partnerships than traditional sales. We do pitch selectively, but we focus heavily on building long-term trust and becoming an extension of a client’s creative team rather than simply a vendor.

What’s your one big hope for the future of the industry?

*I hope the industry continues moving toward authenticity and meaningful work. Audiences are incredibly intelligent, and they respond to honesty. I’d love to see more brands take creative risks and prioritize emotional connection over algorithms and trends.

Can you share a defining moment in your company's journey that shaped its identity or direction?

One defining moment was realizing that the projects we were most proud of weren’t necessarily the biggest productions; they were the ones where there was complete creative trust between us and the client. That really shaped the company’s philosophy moving forward. We realized the relationship behind the work matters just as much as the work itself.

How do you foster a culture of innovation and experimentation within your team?

We encourage people to bring ideas from outside traditional advertising into the process. Whether it’s music, film, fashion, emerging technology, or personal experiences, experimentation usually comes from unexpected places. We also create an environment where people feel safe taking creative risks without fear of failure.

What measures do you take to ensure diversity and inclusion are prioritised within your company?

*We believe better storytelling comes from broader perspectives. We actively seek collaborators from different backgrounds, experiences, and creative disciplines because it strengthens both the process and the final work. Inclusion isn’t something we treat as a checkbox; it's essential to creating work that feels honest and culturally aware.

Can you describe a project that challenged your team creatively and how you overcame any obstacles?

One of the most challenging projects involved creating emotionally driven content with very limited production time and resources. Instead of trying to force scale, we leaned into intimacy. We simplified the approach, focused on performance and atmosphere, and ultimately created something more emotionally impactful because of those limitations.

How do you balance maintaining your company's unique creative voice while meeting the diverse needs of clients?

We view our creative voice as a lens, not a formula. Every client has different needs, but the throughline is always emotional clarity and thoughtful storytelling. Our job is to elevate the client’s vision while bringing our sensibility and craft into the process.

What strategies do you employ to adapt to changes and trends in the industry while staying true to your company's values?

*We pay attention to shifts in the markets in terms of audience behavior, culture, technology and although the tools constantly evolve (i.e. the latest AI capabilities) storytelling fundamentals will always be the backbone of creating compelling work.

Can you share a memorable client success story that exemplifies your company's approach and impact?

One of the most rewarding experiences has been helping brands discover a more authentic voice. We’ve had projects where clients initially approached us focused on deliverables, but through the creative process we uncovered a deeper emotional story that ultimately resonated far more strongly with their audience. Those moments reinforce why collaboration and trust matter so much.

In what ways do you invest in the professional development and growth of your team members?

We encourage the team at Gas Lamp to continuously explore new creative disciplines, technologies, and storytelling approaches. We also try to create opportunities for people to step outside rigid roles and contribute creatively across different parts of the process. Growth happens fastest when people feel creatively empowered.

How do you approach sustainability and ethical practices within your company's operations and projects?

*We try to approach production thoughtfully and responsibly by minimizing unnecessary waste, supporting efficient workflows, and building respectful working environments. Ethics, transparency and trust are the cornerstone of Gas Lamp, both internally and in how we collaborate with clients and crews.

Can you discuss a time when your company had to pivot or innovate in response to unforeseen challenges, and what lessons did you learn from that experience?

During periods where production limitations made traditional shoots difficult, we had to rethink how stories could be told with smaller crews, remote collaboration, and leaner production methods. It reinforced the idea that creativity thrives under constraints. Some of our strongest work came from simplifying and focusing on emotional truth rather than scale.
