CHILDREN’S MURAL FOR MILTON KEYNES UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Published

A super commission for a mural that now appears in the reception to the children’s ward in Milton Keynes University Hospital.

The brief was to create a ‘nature and sustainability’ themed landscape.  Adults could encourage children to engage with the image as a means of passing time whilst waiting for their appointment.  The mural included items peculiar to Milton Keynes. Look for a concrete cow and a very unusual, distinctive windmill. All great fun to research and create!

This was vector art in Adobe Illustrator.  I adopted a very limited, more neutral and understated colour range to ensure the mural would be an extension of the adjoining wall.

As always I began with rough thumbnails which were put forward in a Teams meeting to discuss the various elements and iron out any issues that might crop up.

The second rough was much closer to the final image. It was more of a mood board. I like to nail the finer details before I beginning on the final art. I find this approach limits the number of author’s corrections and ‘afterthought cramming’ at the end of the project.

You will notice that the image was created to work around the wall sockets and a tv screen.

I’m very grateful to Clare Underwood from Peeli Print and Tim Landreth from Nuneaton Signs for this wonderful opportunity! Rock on!
