The Turkish production studio with global ambitions #CompanySpotlight

Published by

This week we spoke to Anima Instanbul, to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with being a production studio based outside of the European and US creative bubble.

How was your company formed, and where are you based?

Anima was established in 1995 by a group of friends from various art schools across Turkey who were passionate about creating stop-motion animations. Over the years, we've evolved into a full-service production and post-production house.

*

Today, we are a fully integrated production company proficient in all kinds of production and animation techniques, handling everything from script development to post-production, all under one roof. Our base is in Istanbul, but we operate globally.

What has been the biggest challenge in growing your company?

The most significant challenge was establishing a creative company in Turkey during a time when there was little to no notable creative industry, specifically in 1995. We found ourselves training industry professionals as we expanded, essentially shaping the industry and stimulating demand simultaneously.

It was also challenging to keep our technology up to date, transitioning from analog to digital workflows, which required extensive team training, especially while handling high-budget commercials.

Can you recall a major success for your company?

A standout success would be 'Bad Cat' in 2016, marking Turkey's first adult animation feature film. It was shown in over 30 countries and received nominations and awards from international festivals, marking a significant milestone for us.

What are the biggest opportunities for your company in the coming year?

The most significant opportunity lies in expanding our international presence and becoming globally recognized as a comprehensive production service company, building on our reputation in Turkey.

Can you describe your team's creative process and what makes it unique?

Our team's unique approach lies in our adaptability to digital changes and our collaborative environment, bringing together talented individuals from various disciplines. We focus on producing 'good films' regardless of scale, driven by special interest, investment, and specialization.

*

Our diverse film portfolio across genres attests to our belief. Our unique pipeline, developed from years of field experience, supports our creativity and productivity.

How does your team stay inspired and motivated?

Our large, familial team includes founders, directors, producers, writers, and artists, all sharing a passion for innovation and staying abreast of trends. This diverse creative environment fosters continuous inspiration and motivation through constant brainstorming and exchange of new ideas.

How has COVID-19 affected your company?

The pandemic has been a learning curve, showing us that remote work can be as effective as office work.

*

It prompted us to develop creative solutions for storytelling that adapt to COVID-19 restrictions, ultimately enriching our creativity and resilience.

From which agencies do you draw inspiration? Do you have any industry heroes?

We draw inspiration from agencies like The Mill, Platige Image, Academy Films, Bacon Films, and Tempo Media, among others.

What advice would you give to other agencies aiming for growth?

Stay committed to quality and continue expanding your creativity. Dreaming big has always been our approach.

How do you attract new clients or business?

We generally don't seek out new clients; they come to us, attracted by our previous projects and the reputation we've built.

What is your greatest hope for the future of the industry?

*

We hope for a future where the industry places greater emphasis on storytelling that raises awareness on critical issues like sustainability.

Do you have any recommended resources for others in the industry?

A valuable resource we recommend is "99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style," which is crucial for understanding storytelling.
