How to...Don't just stand there, make your own Olympic Torch

Published

by John Fountain

*Now that the Olympic flame is finally arriving on these shores and they've tracked down a mutton handed individual in Cornwall to keep the frigging thing alight, our thoughts turn to the proud British torchbearers and wonder how we, members of the UK creative community, might muscle in, nay hijack the occasion and join the 8000 on their inspirational journey.

*Below I have created instructions for you to create a relatively easy ceremonial Olympic Torch. All you have to do is make it, put on some fresh white clothes and then set the thing alight. Once you've got a decent flame going in one hand, and an olive branch in the other, go for a jog down the shops. Of course you don't have to actually light it if you're a bit girly with flames and such. The red and yellow tissue paper does look very effective on its own.

All that I ask is you get someone to take a shot of the occasion and forward it to me at Creativepool. I'll then put it in the post and bingo, we'll put a post up of Creativepool torchbearers. Yay, how cool is that?

What you'll need:
- 1 sheet of A2 white card
- Clear tape
- Red, yellow, and orange tissue paper, 12" x 12" square of each colour
- White craft glue or staple gun

*How to make it:

- Roll the construction paper into a cone shape, tape closed.

- Layer the tissue paper squares, red on the bottom, then orange, and yellow on top.

- Gather from the center of the squares and hold in your hand like a bouquet of flowers.

- Put some white craft glue into the sides of the opening of the cone.

- Place the tissue paper into the cone and let the glue dry completely.

Tips:
- Have a piece of tape ready before rolling the cone, this way you won't be struggling with the tape while trying to hold the cone's shape.
- When you run with the torch keep well away from pedestrians who may confuse you for David Beckham
