The interweb can be amazing sometimes. For a start, I don’t think I’d visit half the places that rabbit-holes link-chasing take me if I didn’t allow for its distraction. Take Dazeddigital (the home of Dazed and Confused, and aptly named as far as an old fart like me is concerned) and an article about how us British love to abbreviate stuff.

Hardly news, but the article’s observation was on a fairly recent uptick of something more distinct that emoji’s and the YYSSW acronyming that (I assume still) is the preserve of texting. 

I must admit I have a love-hate thing with abbreviations. I love the text-brevity of first-letter-from-each-word - ffs, omi, iicr - but intensely dislike the corporate-jargon and smug self-knowing of business-unit capitalisations. Well, maybe apart from NASA. I like that. All the rest can f-off. On which note, brings us to the point of this, and how to achieve shortness with style and the pithy new world of abbreviations. 

These new Abbreviates (with a capital letter, to catch people who speak in abbreviations - maybe we should call the Brevys?) sound more like a smashed up mixture of rhyming slang and text-typing and is spinning out a sort of ‘meta-language’ that’s making itself comfortable on chat-threads - hackronym’s I’ll call them, bending language into fun new shapes.
