As the TV industry readies itself for another year of existential soul-searching, it’s worth remembering that we’ve come through tough times and there’s usually been a light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s been a long few years – the next iteration of what MIPTV was for Cannes was long debated in terms of its relevance, necessity, and purpose. It consistently proved the industry DID want to meet in person when it could – but is there a new version of this? Could we be better served outside of Cannes earlier in the year, aside from the October rendezvous that is MIPCOM as RX’s undeniable flagship event (for now…)?
But there’s a lot riding on it, as indie producers really need this year to *work*. Whether it’s finally getting more commissions through, leveraging international co production treaties or finding other forms of funding - connections, deals and financing have never been more crucial.
So following on from London Screenings, where the major distributors showcase their wares to international buyers, we’re hoping MIPLondon is a worthy market for indies, super indies and studios alike.
Welcome to the content carnival – do NOT hold onto your business cards.
MIP London and the London Screenings
Coming to the capital for its inaugural debut, just after the London Screenings, there will be plenty of buyers in town. Whether it becomes the go-to market for television and entertainment execs remains to be seen.
For anyone coming to or still considering coming to London – it’s the perfect chance to build new contacts and maintain those you already have. And to come and visit us at Percy & Warren on our home turf, of course.
For those expecting it to be MIPTV.2, Lucy Smith, Director of MIP London, has been vocal in saying that this isn’t the “Palais on the Thames”.
Instead, we are welcoming “…a new conference, networking, and screening event, with an international marketplace.”
Designed to compliment the Screenings, the aim is to reduce travel time and corporate costs. Smith also pointed out that MIP London was scheduled for Feb as the distribution calendar has moved earlier in the year and buyers are looking to spend their budget earlier. That should be huge motivator for anyone who is still undecided on attending.
The emphasis of MIP London is on the market and networking, rather than the conference – it’s about buyers buying and sellers selling.
That being said, there are some interesting panels and sessions being lined up. The full schedule has yet to be released, but we are aware of a several that are in the pipeline as our clients are speaking on them. We’ll let RX announce those in due course.
This year’s MIP London content is set to focus primarily on docs and formats, with digital and branded content – and half a day on kids – there’s a meeting of the new and old worlds of media production. A huge segment of the editorial is based around the content creator economy – whether that’s totally your lane, or something you’re dipping into, talk to us about connecting with the right people while you’re over here.
But stay tuned, as there is more to come. And following on from London Screenings, where the major distributors showcase their wares to international buyers, we’re hoping MIP London is a worthy market for indies, super indies and studios alike.
