The Ivy gets a little sister

Published by

The iconic London restaurant, The Ivy, which has seen more celebrity diners than perhaps any other in our nation's capital, is opening a sister restaurant in Covent Garden, featuring interior design work by the acclaimed Martin Brudnizki Design Studio. The Ivy Market Grill is intended to be a less formal alternative to its sibling, offering all-day dining and a design which “Transports diners back to the faded grandeur of turn-of-the-century England,” with a look and feel inspired by the “Raw beauty of the second industrial age. The restaurant is being marketed as a “Home away from home” for Ivy regulars and a more accessible alternative for those perhaps a little intimidated by the atmosphere (and prices) of the famous eatery.

At the heart of the venue, which is operated by Caprice Holdings and is open now, sits a gorgeous antique steel and pewter bar, complete with brass lamps and an aged brass clock face which exhumes the spirit of the “Golden age of railway travel.” The restaurant also features a crackle-glazed tiled dado panel with a William Morris motif running through the interior. The lobby, meanwhile is equally resplendent with a subtle marble mosaic flooring, antique brass chandeliers and large antique mirrors. The venue is furnished by a mix of banquettes, benches, bar stools and chairs, all dressed in classic British racing green leather. The venue is set over two floors and also includes a luxurious terrace area.

Martin Brudnizki said they wished to create “A café and restaurant aimed at the next generation of London literati.” He added that the design is “Centred on an industrial aesthetic, with the bar, glazed green, orange and teal dado panel and an air of distressed charm all combining to offer a vibrant yet established space.”

The kitchen at the Market Grill is run by head chef, Sean Burbridge, whose menu highlights include truffled eggs, crispy duck salad and an indulgent lobster cocktail. There is also an original sandwich menu including more healthy options for a post-gym bite or a light lunch. The Grill also serves its own gin and Champagne and bespoke cocktails such as the Henrietta Maria Treacle and the Inigo Jones Fizz.

To celebrate the launch of the restaurant, guests were encouraged to bring unwrapped presents for the Kids Company charity

To celebrate the launch of the restaurant yesterday (November 24), the Ivy Market Grill partnered with the Kids Company charity by encouraging guests to bring unwrapped presents with them, which will be donated to the young people and children across the city being nurtured by the charity. They will also be donating 50p per cover on each booking from now up until Christmas. The venue was opened by Richard Caring, owner of Caprice Holdings.
