Facebook brings wireless internet to the developing world

Hoping to establish itself as the social media network that cares, Facebook this week announced it is developing wireless internet access hardware and software that can be used in areas where the current infrastructure doesn’t support connectivity. The OpenCellular initiative is designed to rectify the fact that 4 billion people worldwide still do not have basic internet access, while 10% of the world’s population live outside the range of cellular activity, according to the United Nations’ Broadband Commission.
