Sven-Göran Eriksson and Mark Lawrenson place their bets

Published by

Football legends Sven-Göran Eriksson (former England manager and current Shanghai SIPG manager) and Mark Lawrenson (BBC football presenter and former Liverpool defender) recently starred in a new campaign for the online betting site BetVictor. In the two TV spots, created by VCCP and launched in the UK over the weekend, both Eriksson and Lawrenson draw attention to the fact that BetVictor is the only online betting site endorsed by independent odds comparison site Oddschecker as the site that offers the best prices on match odds (according to data drawn from last season.) This is the fourth year in a row the site has received the honour.

The ads, which debuted on Sky Sports 1 yesterday ahead of the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, also mark the return of the brand's “Maurice” character, played by comedian Paul Kaye. Victor Chandler, BetVictor’s founder who often appears in ads for his company, does not appear in the campaign.

The first of the two ads (below) features Maurice invading Mr Ericksson's personal model train set in order to get the latest scoop on the upcoming football odds, only for the former England manager to point him in the direction of the BetVictor website and app. Hot Seat, meanwhile stars Lawrenson, who is also tackled by Maurice on the toilet, though that ad has yet to debut. The spots are being spread via social media with the #MauriceIsBack hashtag, hoping to draw attention to Kaye's zany character, which is a world away from the Dennis Pennis mantle with which he made his name.

Anton Bell, chief marketing officer at BetVictor, said they are “Delighted to bring Maurice back to TV and develop the story line further,” as they feel it provides them “With a creative route that stands out from other gaming companies.” He adds, “Maurice has certainly caught the betting public’s imagination to date and this latest series of adverts sees him up to his old tricks alongside two of the most instantly recognisable figures in the world of football.”
