Paul Windle Design is flying high

Published by

Paul Windle Design’s creative art studio have collaborated with the Virgin Atlantic design team to create the new ‘Birthday Girl’ flying lady illustration for the airline’s latest hi-tech Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

The first Virgin Atlantic Dreamliner has been named 'Birthday Girl' in celebration of the 30 years since the airline’s inaugural flight across the Atlantic. This flagship aircraft showcases the brand's innovative design and unique customer experience and the livery features this special edition of the flying lady icon.

The flying lady dates back to the first Virgin Atlantic livery in 1984. Paul Windle Design have created this new special edition, reflecting Virgin Atlantic’s unique style and flair. Designed exclusively as a one-off for the first Boeing 787-9 in the fleet, for the first time ever, the whole face of this iconic flying lady is revealed as she is seen hovering upright and facing the viewer.

“It was an honour to be asked by the design team at Virgin Atlantic to illustrate this distinctive red head” said John Dyer, Director and Senior Artist at Paul Windle Design. “We loved the challenge of evolving this iconic character into her new celebratory pose, raising a champagne coupe with her face turned forwards for once.”

“It was a proud moment to see the finished results when 'Birthday Girl' was revealed at her inaugural flight,” said Dyer.

“Seeing her take to the skies flying the flag for this iconic British brand is something dreams are made of.”
