Guitar Hero makes a triumphant return

An epic new spot was posted online yesterday giving wannabe rock stars everywhere their first taste of Guitar Hero Live, the first Guitar game to be released in five years and the first for next generation (or is that current generation now?) consoles. The 3 minute trailer puts viewers in the shoes of a lead guitarist taking to the stage at a packed stadium show to thousands of screaming fans, only to fail horribly. Anyone who has ever played a Guitar Hero game (and sucked at it) will be more than familiar with the clinking, missed note sound that accompanies this particular part of the video. The guitarist manages to pull back from the jaws of defeat though, and The Black Keys “Gold on the Ceiling” kicks in as the crowd go wild. It's all in an effort to underline the new direction the series is taking with this latest iteration, which puts an emphasis on performing live to an actual crowd.

Guitar Hero has become known as one of the most iconic titles in gaming, to the extent that there's even an entire South Park episode dedicated to it. The only other game to hold that honour is World of Warcraft! But with a fan base of more than 40 million people worldwide, it's no wonder that the satirical kingpins decided to poke fun, and it's no wonder that the reveal trailer (below) has already racked up over 3 million views on YouTube! The trailer was created by 72andSunny, who were given a mandate by publishers Activision to create a game trailer that doesn’t show you just what it’s like to play the game, but what you’ll actually experience in the game. The trailer shows off the revolutionary new game engine, which combines the familiar guitar board system with live footage of crowds that actually react to the player's performance!

Guitar Hero Live Reveal Trailer

The trailer was a close collaboration between Activision, developer Freestyle Games, and 72andSunny, and was an incredibly ambitious shoot. To capture the experience for the trailer, 72andSunny and director Giorgio Testi worked alongside co-director and game developer Jamie Jackson to shoot additional footage from the live-action shoots for the game, including scenes that put the player backstage, fighting off stage fright and finally ready to start the show. It al makes for an incredibly immersive experience that would simply not have been possible on last generation hardware. It's obvious why the series has been put to bed for a while, as what we've seen so far looks pretty damn special indeed so the work has obviously paid off.

The trailer culminates in a section that explains more about the game, with the GHLIVE option supplemented by the GHTV mode, which is described as the “World's first playable music video network.” It also teasers the redesigned guitar controller, which is said to make it easier for beginners to learn and harder for veterans to master. The game is also coming to select mobile devices, though specifics on that front are yet to be announced. Tim Ellis, chief marketing officer at Activision, said “The creative centre of both Guitar Hero Live and the trailer for the game is about bringing to life the visceral thrill and terror of being up there in front of thousands of people.” We don't know about terrifying, but it certainly looks pretty thrilling to us Tim! The game is set to be released in October this year, and will be going up against Rock Band 4 by Harmonix.
