foam Studio plays with perceptions of ‘car porn’ in new art series

Published by

foam has released two lines of work exploring alternative visualisations of the traditional ‘car porn’ genre. The works, bias and WARP CLASSICS, apply two bold and distinct styles to automotive machines. Simulated light, reflection and surfaces play together to put a captivating new perspective on everyday objects.

The two lines of work, created using foam’s unique hyper real 3D CG style, explore a minimalist and a complex approach respectively. bias encompasses dense surfaces and straight lines in combination with bold colours. Whereas WARP CLASSICS takes on complexity through juxtaposing classic car colours and lighting with seemingly fluid and organic shapes of industrial car forms, illustrating a twist on the classic car porn genre. Both styles celebrate the intricacies of foam Studio’s craft, yet articulate a witty rupture in the common perception of the genre.

The works challenge perceptions of the forms we are accustomed to in everyday life and that of the conventional photography gaze.

On the inspiration behind the series, Henrik Mauler, Founder of foam Studio explains: “We were playing around with ideas that would visually manipulate ideas of mobility and automotive. We decided the work would explore new ways to realise the ‘car porn’ genre, showcasing typical details in all their glory. The two films put form and surface to the test in different ways. Colour played an important role to support the graphical abstraction of the shapes in bias, whereas WARP CLASSICS was about reflection and how it plays on the surface - so the colours were more traditional. We wanted to create very organic, soft shapes and round bends, picking out traditional details that have rich reflective qualities. In bias, we wanted to have a deliberate complexity with straight surfaces to get a more graphic look.”
