Dulux Creative Director, Marianne Shillingford: Create Britain Collaborative Canvas

Published by

Marianne Shillingford is the Creative Director for Dulux. She utilises her extensive experience and applies it to product development, colour communication and the Dulux Design Service.

Marianne and Dulux kindly agreed to partner up with Creativepool on the Collaborative Canvas for the launch of Create Britain on 28th March 2013. We caught up with Marianne ahead of the event to find out why Dulux wanted to become involved in Create Britain and what the brand had planned for the future.

1)    What’s the reason for Dulux collaborating with an initiative like Create Britain?

Our aim at Dulux is to unlock and inspire the creativity of our customers.  Getting involved in a great initiative to champion, promote and encourage the extraordinary creative talent we have in this country is important to Dulux.

2)    What does this kind of collaborative work demonstrate about the creative industries and working together?

Good collaboration always results in outcomes that are greater and more effective than the things we can achieve as individuals.  Modern life is increasingly focussed on the way things come together to create networks of dialogue and platforms for sharing ideas that result in innovation.   The theme of ‘Connections’ has been the driving influence of our international Colour Futures Trends for 2013 and we will continue to seek to make connections with the widest range of creative talent from industry to the arts.

3)    What’s Dulux’s involvement in the creative industries?

Our involvement with the creative industries ranges from working with leading marketing, advertising and PR agencies to our own pool of brilliant colour experts and interior designers.  We also work with leading professionals and key figures in the fields of design, fashion, technology and the arts and have just launched the Dulux Lets Colour Awards to recognise and celebrate the creative use of colour across these industries.

4)    What inspired the new Dulux palette?

The new Dulux Trend palette for spring/summer 2013 is called ‘Collective Passion’.  It is inspired by the spontaneous and energetic behaviour encouraged by social media and the possibilities to connect and share ideas on a global scale.  The colours are highly light reflective, almost fluorescent in appearance and fizz with life, encouraging us to be more creative with the walls and surfaces of our living spaces by adding layered and blended paint features.

5)    How does it fit with Create Britain’s goals of collaboration and creativity?

The collective noun for a group of creative must simply be a ‘Collective Passion”…

6)    Interesting facts we didn’t know about Dulux

Dulux have nearly 15,000 colours and more than one Old English Sheep dog.  Amongst hundreds of other innovative products Dulux have a product, Light & Space that reflects 40% more light than standard emulsion which helps to increase light levels without increasing energy costs.  Dulux have a dedicated Global Aesthetics Centre where trends in colour and interior design are researched and launched.  Dulux is owned by Akzo Nobel, one of the largest manufacturers of surface coatings in the world.

7)    What can we expect to see next from Dulux?

Colour is at the heart of everything we do, and thus we offer so much more than just paint in a can.  Open the lid and you’ll find colour, inspiration, possibilities, expertise and fun.
