The best and worst jobs of 2012 - where does yours place?

Published

Careercast.com is a website owned by Adicio inc. and has just drawn up a list of the best and worst US jobs for 2012. There are 200 jobs in the list and it's compiled from data from the Bureau Of Labour Statistics, takings aspects such as work environment, physical demands, income, stress and hiring outlook into account.

Accoring to Careercast, the worst possible job you could have is that of a Lumberjack. Although the outdoor life might sound appealing to some, the $32,114 salary and the risk of having 20, 000 pound logs swinging around your head made it the worst career choice on the planet. A slump in construction is also making the demand for logs rather low, a spokesperson for Careercast states:

"Unemployment for lumberjacks is very high, and the demand for their services is expected to continue to fall [until] 2016," the site says. "And while working outside all day may seem like a great job perk, being a lumberjack not only is considered the worst job, but also one of the world's most dangerous."

Here is the list of the other worst jobs

Worst Jobs

1. Lumberjack
2. Dairy farmer
3. Enlisted military soldier
4. Oil rig worker
5. Reporter (newspaper)
6. Waiter/waitress
7. Meter reader
8. Dishwasher
9. Butcher
10. Broadcaster

On the other side of the coin, the best job you can possibly have is that of a Software Engineer. It's the second year in a row that this bagged the top spot, owing to the $88,142 salary, and the growing demand by big companies for skilled people who can develop their online platforms.

Here are the other best jobs:

Best Jobs

1. Software engineer
2. Actuary
3. Human Resources manager
4. Dental hygienist
5. Financial planner
6. Audiologist
7. Occupational therapist
8. Online advertising manager
9. Computer systems analyst
10. Mathematician

Oddly enough these jobs are all desk-based which for a lot of people, is far from ideal. It is also interesting that a job in HR made the top three as this has of course been the era for layoffs, anxious employees and cutbacks. It must be a sign of good things to come that companies are hiring rather than firing again.

The other list which was compiled was the top ten most stressful jobs which has caused some controversy amongst people which was doctors, nurses and midwives etc.

Most Stressful Jobs

1. Enlisted soldier
2. Firefighter
3. Airline pilot
4. Military General
