Spotlight: Tyrion Lannister stands tall in Morales-Lee illustrations

Published by

Game of Thrones fans will love one of the pieces in artist and illustrator Patrick Morales-Lee’s Boxset Legends series. The collection sees Tyrion Lannister, one of the HBO show’s most admired characters, make an appearance (below) and the sketch is a perfect likeness.

Other shows to feature in the series are Girls, The Wire and Better Call Saul, but Boxset Legends is just one example of the artist’s work, which favours an erratic and uncontrolled style.

“I like the idea of creating marks in an unconscious way, allowing accidents and errors to happen," explains the artist, originally from Somerset but now based in Whitstable. Recognising which marks work and which don’t is key to a successful piece.”

Morales-Lee has been commissioned by Faberge, ITV, Channel 5 and Bentley Motors but he also sells his personal pieces and is currently working on a first limited-edition print run. It’s only in the last three years in fact that Morales-Lee has upped his efforts to work as an illustrator, evolving his style and generating a portfolio in that time.

“Everything I do starts with a drawing,” he explains. “I use pencil and charcoal, loosen it up so it almost becomes like paint then I can move it around. It’s a very instinctual process as it dries within 10 minutes.”

Another trick is to use Photoshop to ‘remix’ drawings and he sometimes creates the illusion of watercolour brushes for colour and texture. "Other times I use it to create a more contemporary feel, harsh compositions, crops and colours sometimes bringing in photographic elements," he concludes.

Morales-Lee is represented by Central Illustration Agency in London. See more work and connect with him here.
