#MemberSpotlight on Graphic Designer and Creative Director Gavin Davis

Published by

How did you get into the industry?

I studied and qualified as a Graphic Designer where I worked for many years. During this time, I found a passion for 3D animation which I then self-taught myself and began introducing this into my job and freelance. I then went from 3D into motion graphics and video editing and finally directing.

Where are you based now and who do you work for?

Based in Hampshire United Kingdom I currently freelance and I'm actively looking to either grow my client base with annuity work or find something permanent if I find the right inspiration company.

If you weren’t in your current industry, what would you be doing?

*

I would either be racing cars, motorcycles or perhaps in a band.

Can you explain your creative process? What makes it unique?

I think there is no recipe for creativity or it's process. You're either creative or you’re not, it tends to come naturally but I feel I must be inspired.

I also think clearing your mind whether it's going to do something interesting like painting, practicing guitar, Mountain bike riding for me in the forest, even listening to music or going for a drive helps me get into a zone.

How would you describe your style?

Ohh tough one, I would say it's a blend of contemporary design colliding into emotional grunge influenced by aspects of my life like growing up in South Africa with its multicultural surroundings. Now living in the UK I've found it's become even more in-depth.

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

*

As a creative I'm influenced by so many brilliant artists, but I would say if I was forced to choose one name it would be Vaughan Oliver (creative genius from v23 responsible for some of the most prolific album covers since the 80’s).

Then obviously my children are a huge inspiration to me as they are without a doubt my greatest achievement.

What tips would you give to aspiring creatives looking for work?

Honestly it might sound like a cliché but, believe in yourself, listen to feedback but never to negative comments and always trust your own expression.

Then most importantly NEVER give up! Rejection in this industry is part and parcel of the job but don't let it taint your drive or inspiration. Be positive and bet on you!

What tips would you give to other professionals to get more clients?

If you know the answer to that please tell me(haha). I would say just don't quit! Don't wait for doors to open, you must bang them down!  Be active, be relevant and you will be seen.

What kind of tools/kit/software could you not do without?

*

I run on a Dell precision notebook which gives me the power and flexibility to work from home or on-site which makes me very agile.

I've used many different tools in my career, but I would say it's been trimmed down to the Adobe suite (after effects, premier pro, photoshop, illustrator) and then Cinema 4D with Octane.

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

Music without a doubt but keeping active and making sure your mind is always inspired but something be it nature, photography, car or motorcycle design. Painting and Art and movies are also great inspirations and motivations.

What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?

It would be the Wiggle Kids electric toothbrush and being short listed in the Creativepool, winning awards for music videos I directed and edited for rock band Prime Circle, winning a design competition for Ducati motorcycle Corp many years ago.

What is the one thing that you would change about the industry?

*

More respect for artists. I would love for creatives time, efforts, and rates to be respected more. Being creative means giving so much of yourself and when that is appreciated and respected it makes all the difference to the job.

Any websites, books or resources you would recommend?

I enjoy ArtStation and “the subtle art of not giving a f*ck by Mark Manson”. Busy currently with “the storyteller by Dave Grohl”.

I also found the documentary about Banksy very inspirational “exit through the gift shop”.
