#MemberSpotlight on freelance documentary and travel photographer Mark Benham

Published by

How did you get into the industry?

After almost 30 years as a graphic designer and art director I needed a change. I went to Portugal and began working on a photo book about the country; which was subsequently published, kickstarting my photographic career.

Where are you based now and who do you work for?

I’m currently based in the south west of England. I’ve worked for myself since 2013.

If you weren’t in your current industry, what would you be doing?

A Glimpse of Berlin

I’m not entirely sure, but I’d like to be involved in something worthy. I’ve worked as a photographer with the charity People Against Poverty, which was both humbling and inspiring.

Can you explain your creative process? What makes it unique?

It’s not rocket science; I make photographs. However, I would say I spend as much time planning my projects as I do taking pictures. I suppose my pictures are influenced, to some extent, by my graphic design background. I have a keen eye for strong compositions.

How would you describe your style?

I’m not sure, my work has changed in recent years. - I think my graphics background shows in the way I compose many of my shots, especially nowadays, often simple and uncluttered.

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

Making Cider

No particular names, but I admire those who make me stop and look, whether photography or another art form.

What tips would you give to aspiring creatives looking for work?

Be yourself and don’t be swayed from your aspirations; take the knocks and carry on. At times my confidence has been knocked, both in design and photography. It helps to be resilient. Love what you do.

What tips would you give to other professionals to get more clients?

I’m not sure other professionals would need tips from me, however, and for what it’s worth - when I won Pink Lady Photographer of the Year in 2016 it attracted a few new clients, so awards can help with one’s profile. I entered an image which was taken during an unpaid shoot I’d arranged. In other words, I invested in my portfolio.

What kind of tools/kit/software could you not do without?

*

Street Bubbles

Digital image equipment (camera and lenses) and processing software - I use Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop.

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

Inner belief, personal drive and inspiration, wherever that comes from.

What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?

Moving over from graphics gave me new challenges, but performing at a high level was the same. Early commissions for a London banding agency was a baptism of fire. I survived.

I’m proud of the work I have done with People Against Poverty in Romania and Nepal. As far as my personal work is concerned, I’m proud to have achieved success in the Sony World Photography Awards this year.

What is the one thing that you would change about the industry?
