#MemberSpotlight on Emptylayer 3D Artist, Denis Donea

Published by

How did you get into the industry?

I developed a passion for the 3D world after completing my degree in interior design, and it has been nearly a decade since then. Despite the passing of time, I still find it exciting and engaging.

Throughout this period, I have worked in various roles in the 3D industry, including as a texturing artist, a generalist, and a lead 3D artist specializing in architectural visualization.

Where are you based now and who do you work for?

I am a London-based professional, working as a freelance 3D artist at Emptylayer.com to assist architects, interior designers, and real estate developers in realizing their creative vision.

If you weren’t in your current industry, what would you be doing?

*

Machine learning engineering. The idea of developing algorithms and systems that can learn and improve from data fascinates me.

Can you explain your creative process? What makes it unique?

Firstly, I like to have a clear understanding of the project's goals and requirements, as this helps me to focus my creative vision and ensure that the end product meets the client's expectations.

Next, I conduct thorough research and gather references to help inform the design process. This could include studying architectural plans, exploring different lighting and colour schemes,or examining real-world objects for inspiration.

Once I have a solid foundation of ideas, I move on to the conceptualization phase. This is where I begin sketching out ideas and experimenting with different design elements, such as composition, lighting, and texturing. I believe that this phase is critical to ensuring that the final product is visually compelling and conveys the intended message.

Finally, I bring the design to life using 3D Softwares like Autodesk 3ds Max / Unreal Engine

Throughout this process, I aim to maintain a high level of attention to detail, as even the smallest elements can have a significant impact on the overall quality of the final product.

What sets my creative process apart is my ability to balance technical expertise with artistic vision.I strive to push boundaries and experiment with new techniques and design elements, while also ensuring that the final product is visually stunning and meets the client's needs.

How would you describe your style?

My style as an artist is adaptable to each project's needs, rather than adhering to a specific signature style.

However, common elements in my work include attention to detail, use of lighting and color to create mood, and a focus on creating CGI photorealism.

Which individuals do you gain inspiration from? Do you have any heroes in the industry?

*

As an artist, I draw inspiration from a wide range of sources. Three individuals who have had a significant impact on my work are Akira Kurosawa, Stanley Kubrick, and Katsuhiro Otomo.

Kurosawa's ability to create visually stunning and emotionally powerful films has taught me a lot about the importance of storytelling and character development. Kubrick's attention to detail and his innovative use of technology have inspired me to push the boundaries of what is possible in the 3D art world.

Finally, Otomo's manga series "Akira" and his ability to create a rich, immersive world has taught me a lot about the importance of world-building in storytelling and visual arts.

I do not have heroes in the industry, but I deeply admire the work of Mir.no.

What tips would you give to aspiring creatives looking for work?

Finding work in the creative industry can be challenging, so don't get discouraged if you don't land your dream job right away. Keep working on your craft and stay persistent in pursuing your goals.

Another tip that I would give to aspiring creatives looking for work is to put in the time and effort to hone your skills.

As the saying goes, "practice makes perfect," and it is often said that it takes around 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become an expert in a particular skill or field. So, don't be afraid to put in the time and effort to perfect your craft and develop your skills.

By dedicating yourself to your art and putting in the hours of practice, you will increase your chances of success in the industry.

What tips would you give to other professionals to get more clients?

*

It's not uncommon for professionals to get caught up in the execution of a project and lose sight of the bigger picture.

While it's important to have a strong focus on the details and make sure the execution is top-notch, it's equally important to keep the overarching vision of the project in mind. Focusing too much on the execution can lead to a disconnect between the project and its intended purpose, resulting in a less-than-satisfactory outcome for the client.

By delivering exceptional work and consistently demonstrating professionalism and reliability, professionals can establish themselves as trusted experts in their field and attract new opportunities.

What kind of tools/kit/software could you not do without?

There are several tools, software, and resources that are indispensable to my work. Firstly, 3ds Max and Corona Renderer are critical software that I use for modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering 3D scenes.

These tools enable me to create photorealistic visualizations of architecture, interiors, and products. Secondly, I rely heavily on Itoo Forest Pack and RailClone, which are plugins for 3ds Max that allow me to create complex environments and architectural details quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, Tyflow is a particle simulation software that I use for creating a wide range of effects, from realistic fire and smoke to water simulation and cloth simulation. Thirdly, Unreal Engine is a powerful tool for creating real-time interactive experiences, such as virtual reality tours or game environments. It enables me to create immersive experiences that bring projects to life.

Fourthly, Substance Painter is a texturing software that enables me to create detailed and realistic materials for 3D models. Finally, PureRef is a tool that helps me organize and reference images and resources while working on a project.

What’s your secret to staying inspired and motivated?

One of my secrets to staying inspired is to surround myself with things that I enjoy, such as coffee, music from my vinyl collection, books, and old movies/anime. These things help me to relax and recharge, which in turn keeps me motivated and focused on my work.

What’s the work achievement you’re most proud of?

*

As a Lead 3D artist, I have had many accomplishments that I am proud of, but one that stands out is my work on the marketing images for a £700m film and TV studio project in Hertfordshire. While still working in an architectural studio, I had the opportunity to contribute to this project, which had a very fast turnaround time.

Despite the tight deadline, I was able to produce high-quality 3D visualizations that showcased the project's design and potential. The project received significant exposure in press releases and other media, which was a great source of pride for me.

This experience taught me a lot about the importance of collaboration, time management, and the power of effective visualization in communicating a project's value. It remains one of my most significant accomplishments to this day.

What is the one thing that you would change about the industry?

I believe that one thing that could be improved in the industry is ensuring that artists and studios charge appropriately for their work. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to undervalue creative work, which can lead to burnout and a lack of investment in talent development.

If artists and studios were more assertive in their pricing and were willing to educate clients about the value of their work, it could help to elevate the industry and ensure that it remains sustainable in the long term.
