Brand Case Studies: A2

Published by

The A2 ethos is rooted around two core values; everything is designed and hand-crafted locally and family ties are important. The team is headed up by collaborators - and siblings - Sara Larsson and Anna Larsson.

The Swedish design duo started their furniture business in 2008; a dream borne out of their desire to merge exciting interiors with local craftwork in their home region of Småland, Sweden. Their vision was to be a new, young and brave brand that dared to realise interesting and a bit different objects whilst celebrating original Swedish craftsmanship. Still to this day, every single item that A2 creates comes straight from Småland; a small historical province and also the birthplace of IKEA.

With Sara heading up the design and engineering branch of the business and sister Anna overseeing the architectural aspects, the two are putting Swedish furniture and interiors firmly on the map. Of course, Scandinavian design already has a long lineage of key influencers, but this twosome are reworking it in a confident new direction.

Their eagerly anticipated yearly collections mix colour, craft and design in bewitching ways. If there’s a word that first springs to mind when you see their annual offerings it’s BOLD. These are pieces that demand your attention; full of clever geometrics, flat colours and beautiful shapes.

With designs this striking, it’s intriguing to hear the Larsson sisters describe their work so humbly. The two famously use few words, saying only of their 2011 collection; “Collect 2011 is colourful and characterised by its interesting doors with a pattern of triangles in two levels”. When asked about thier designs' intentions they said; "we simply want to challenge the furniture world." Such paired-back descriptions leave their work to do the talking. Without the backdrop of overblown statements or intentions, the collections stamp their feet and demand your attention.

And challenge the furniture world they do. Cabinets, chairs, tables, shelves and bookcase are imagined with strong inherent identities, echoed with carefully chosen materials and executed with century-honed craft.

The aesthetics of A2 are fed by the legacy of Scandinavian design as well as its key principles; minimalism, functionality and natural materials. But A2 takes this history and reworks the ending, designing each piece with an original idea which shapes the use and purpose of the item. This is design at the top of its game, if it needs explaining to you, chances are you’re not quite getting it.
