Published by

The 55th D&AD Judging Week has come to a close; 733 Pencils have been in awarded in total, decided by juries made up of over 200 of the world’s top creatives.

Entrants can visit www.dandad.org to see if they've won a Pencil, but they will have to wait until the Awards Ceremony at Troxy London on the 27 April to see what kind - Wood, Graphite, Yellow or Black.

The second D&AD Festival also enters its second day, with speakers including Refinery29 co-founder Piera Luisa Gelardi, Nowness creative director Anna Higgs, VICE Media Scandinavia CEO Frederik Andersen and NME editor Mike Williams.

556 Pencils were awarded on the final day of judging, with juries returning results for: Art Direction (13), Book Design (13); Branded Film Content and Entertainment (25); Branding (45); Digital Design (26); Digital Marketing (30); Direct (32); Film Advertising (49); Film Advertising Crafts (106); Graphic Design (63); Integrated (24); Media (40); Packaging Design (13); Press Advertising (17); Product Design (14); Radio & Audio (12); Spatial Design (18); Writing for Advertising (16).

Top ranking countries by number of Pencils won are:

  • 1st: United States - 182 Pencils
  • 2nd: United Kingdom - 164 Pencils
  • 3rd: Australia - 54 Pencils
  • 4th: France and Germany - 30 Pencils

The top ranking agencies by number of Pencils won are:

  • 4th: Droga5 - 12 Pencils
  • 5th: BBDO New York and TBWA\Media Arts Lab - 11 Pencils

All 733 Pencils will appear in the 55th D&AD Annual published later this year.

There are no quotas for awards at D&AD. Therefore the number of awarded entries fluctuates year to year. Some years no Black Pencils are awarded: the record currently stands at seven. Traditionally the toughest of the awards shows, the judging process is famously rigorous, with the juries only selecting work they believe is truly exceptional.

D&AD CEO Tim Lindsay commented: “D&AD Festival 2017 is well under way and it is a spectacular explosion of creativity. From today the 26,000 pieces of work that have been entered into the D&AD Professional Awards can be viewed by all, and we would encourage everyone to take in the sheer breadth of creative excellence that is on show this year. We can’t wait to share the winners with you at the Ceremony tomorrow.”
