Spotlight: Sunell Lombard

Published

Sunell's story begins in Uniondale, South Africa, where after studying Fine Art for 4 years later, it suddenly dawned on her that by doing so she'd probably doomed herself to life of poverty and rejection. In her panic she decided not to change direction, but to study more, and so after completing a Masters in Illustration she reloacted to Bermuda where she worked at the National Gallery and exhibited her work whenever and wherever she could find the opportunity.

How long have you been a Freelancer for?
About a year.

Describe your work in one sentence.
I create caricatures, anthropomorphic characters and cartoons based on people and the myriad ways we express ourselves, interact with each other, and deal with everyday emotions.

What's the most important thing you've learnt in your line of work?
Persistence.

What attracted you to your chosen field?
It makes me happy.

Tell us about your best project to date.
I was invited to reinterpret an image from Goya's Los Caprichos series for the Reinterpreting the European exhibition currently on display at Bermuda National Gallery

What sets you apart?
I think I bring something different to the table.

If you could work on any project for any company/organisation, what would it be and who would it be for?
I would love to work on a Sylvain Chomet animation!

What frustrates you the most about your job?
You never know when the next assignment is going to come by.

What pearl of wisdom can you offer to someone thinking about starting out as a freelancer?
Keep at it and be prepared to burn the midnight oil.

If you could have ONE super power, what would it be?
I want the power to control technology! Like that Mika kid in Heroes, I want cash machines to hemorrhage money at my bidding (no funds required).

What's your favourite bit of kit?
Black ballpoint pen.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I distrust primates.

What's your favourite song of all time?
Sho, that's tough. The best I can do is narrow it to 3 bands; Queens of the Stone Age, Dandy Warhols & Beck.

What is your favourite app?
Google Maps; I'm lost without it (hohoho!)

iPhone or Blackberry?
iPhone

Too Cool for School or too School for Cool?
Way too cool for school man!

Facebook or Twitter?
Facebook

Eat In or eat out?
eat out

Is the Continued Cultural Relevance of Oasis a Masterclass in Marketing?

As a man who came of age in the 90s, my social media feed yesterday was overwhelmed by the news that, after 15 years apart, Oasis would be reforming for a set of gigs next year. On a personal level, Oasis was always anathema to me. As a awkward kid,...
