Simon Pendry "Blue Marlin is the home of landing big ideas, which are at the heart of everything we do. We pride ourselves on delivering relevant, unique and consistent experiences across brand touch points worldwide. Blue Marlin is an independent integrated brand design consultancy with an international network of offices across the UK, USA, Australia and the Far East. We create and grow business through brand strategy, brand innovation, structural design, brand identity and graphic design, and brand environments. Clients range from large multinationals, including Unilever, Shell, GlaxoSmithKline and Cadbury, to small owner-managed entrepreneurial businesses, such as Orchard Pig and Pukka Pies."

What do you actually do?
Make sure we are producing the best creative work possible, and that I am best on the studio pool table.

What would you be doing if you weren't doing that?
I'm a bit of a frustrated chef, so running a small Italian restaurant maybe, wanna book a table, I do a mean risotto?

How did you get started in the industry?
A company called Ziggurat contacted my degree course in Preston about a vacancy, me and my best mate Adam went along for the interview in the big smoke, and we both got a job!

What's your current favourite piece of creative work at the moment?
If I can pick a structure, go to the Highline in New York, fantastic piece of work. www.thehighline.org

What do you love about your job?
The fear of the clean white A3 pad, and the buzz of getting an idea.

If you could give one piece of advice for someone starting out, what would it be?
It's all about the ideas, if you have got plenty of those everything else will slot into place for you.

If you have one Super power what would it be?
Time travel would be epic, would love to see a dinosaur in the flesh. What colour are they anyway?

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Happy that I worked hard, and was nice to people (apologies Anthony Burrill)

What was your worst job and what did you learn from it?
Cleaning the bathroom, never again.

You have already worked with some amazing brands, who would you like to work with next?
I love the variety and surprise of branded packaging, so anything! I was slightly annoyed however that Uncle Joe's Mintballs got redesigned recently, they're made in my home town of Wigan so would have loved to work on that.

Iphone or Blackberry?
Iphone for work, Sony Ericsson with a stupidly high megapixel lens on it for fun.

Your favourite app?
Flipboard is very clever and creative, am addicted to Scrabble on the tube however. Nerd.

Too Cool for School or too School for Cool?
Too cool for cookery school.

Facebook or Twitter?
Don't be stupid!

Eat In or eat out?
Lots of both please. Cooking with a glass of wine is magic, but having Giorgio Locatelli do it for you is a thing of beauty. Visit Locanda Locatelli to see if you agree, bet you will.

Why Creative Labour Isn't Always Seen as "Real Work" #PurposeMonth

Aside from my “day job” as a copywriter/journalist/mercenary, I’ve also worked on and off as a semi professional musician for the last 20 years. At one point around 2008, it seemed as if that career might actually blossom into...

Over the past four years, we have adapted together - and now, our ships are coming in. Comparatively, we may go less often, stay closer to home, and spend more time phoning things in … but new days are growing heavy with promise. In our refined...
