Continuous Lines: The Creative Mind Behind Our Branding

Published by

At JJ Media Group our values are reflected in every aspect of our branding and culture. We are spontaneous, experimental and collaborative. Our mission is to provide our clients with an all-round, efficient, continuous service that exceeds their expectations and makes their lives easy. That’s why we liked the one-line drawings of Jonathan Calugi, they express exactly what we want to provide our clients with; a continuous line of service from the start of your project to the end. We caught up with Jonathan to discover his philosophy, process and just what makes his artwork so great!

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME AN ARTIST?

I think was something really natural in my life. I grew up with a lot of freedom and I made all the wrong decisions in school that took me far away from arts (and now I actually think was lucky I did that!) but art, drawing etc has always been part of my daily life.

*WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?

Life, nature, arts freedom and passion. I’m obsessed with books. I mean, what if one-day internet stopped working? I have so many books and not enough time to read them all! Right now I’m super fascinated with how a baby sees the world. I have a one-year-old and it’s a crazy change of mentality.

WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH THE MOST?

My process is to draw something really quick with a pencil on paper and use a computer to rebalance and simplify it. I love how a computer can help me in my research, but I’m also obsessed with hands-on techniques, so I built a small screen-printing studio with all the materials for engraving etc…

*WHAT DO YOU THINK THE APPEAL IS OF CONTINUOUS LINES?

The simplicity and the connection felt. How everything is just a way to connect two points, one start, and one end.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ART GALLERY TO VISIT?

I love so many galleries I was born in Pistoia so at the moment I’m obsessed with a small museum in my city. The Fondazione Marino Marini is great – [which contains a specialized library on Marino Marini’s work] I love his graphic work!

MOVING CLOSER TO OUR HOME – WHY DO YOU THINK SHOREDITCH HAS BECOME A CENTER FOR CULTURE, FASHION, AND ART?

Because people are free to be themselves! No labels! When you start to be in a place that you like you start to put your energy in! I think this is what’s happening in Shoreditch. It’s like a neighborhood for people all over the world that have the same feel for life.

AS WE’RE BASED IN LONDON, WHICH LANDMARK DO YOU PREFER: THE GERKIN OR THE SHARD?

mmm, I think the Shard.

Is the Continued Cultural Relevance of Oasis a Masterclass in Marketing?

As a man who came of age in the 90s, my social media feed yesterday was overwhelmed by the news that, after 15 years apart, Oasis would be reforming for a set of gigs next year. On a personal level, Oasis was always anathema to me. As a awkward kid,...
