Ape on the Moon

Published
The Ape on the Moon blog is run by two inter-planetary apes. It was founded by illustrator Alex Mathers, with illustrator Philip Dennis based in Tokyo and London.

The blog documents all that is new and exciting about contemporary visual arts projects.

See what we found out when we spoke to the inter-planetary apes:

When did you start out blogging?
Alex started Ape on the Moon in early 2009 with the intention of sharing illustrations what he liked, including some of his own.

How did you choose your blog name?
The name was chosen to combine the humour and playfulness of monkeys with the mystery and intrigue of the moon. As we like to minimise an air of pretentiousness that sometimes accompanies things showcased in the art world, we thought the name would work with what was planned with the site. 'Ape on the Moon' was thus born.

What's it all about and why?
Ape on the Moon seeks to support and promote artists from around the world that produce interesting, quality and unique visual art. The focus is on work process, tools used and the artists themselves. The site now gets around 3000 visits a day and we're planning a hard-copy magazine focusing on Japan-based illustrators.

What do you do when you're not blogging?
Alex currently lives in Tokyo, and enjoys taking pictures, making illustrations and going to traditional Japanese pubs called 'Izakaya'. Philip is also an illustrator and enjoys creating art, watching 80's films and cartoons, and going to art events in London.

If you could be in one place in the world right now, where would it be?
Alex would like to be in a Japanese onsen (hot geothermal spring) and Philip would like to be on a mountain-top meditating, but he hasn't the time.
