5 minutes with... Stephen Royle - The Chase

Published

Stephen Royle, The ChaseTell us what you do for a living and who you work for?
Creative Director at The Chase.

What does that involve?
In its simplest form it's problem solving. We help companies communicate more effectively, whether its a large international business or the electrician round the corner.

How did you get started in the industry?
I was lucky enough to get my portfolio under the nose of Ben Casey on the day of our graduate show. He was in a good mood.
Since then I helped establish The Chase in London and more recently have returned to Manchester.

What would you be doing if you weren't doing that?
I'd be a top flight darts player.

What's your all-time favourite piece of creative work?
I find this really hard to answer. However, I've always considered the Ford Sierra as being a turning point in my life. Not that I owned one. I just remember seeing it for the first time and thinking it was the most far out piece of design ever. I was nine at the time. And from a small town.

What do you love about your job?
The variety. Working with clients across many different sectors means that you absorb how an organisation works. You effectively become part of the team. A recent global signage identity programme for mining giant Rio Tinto meant I spent three days on site in Western Australia completing a signage audit. Sounds dull. It wasn't.

What do you hate about your job?
Working weekends.

Tell us your favourite website?
I don't have one. Not yet anyway. I use websites in a functional way.

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
A decent idea is central to what we do, no matter where you get it from. An idea can come from anywhere. Don't forget to look for them.

Where can people follow you online?
They can't. I live in a bunker. However, I'm toying with the design of my own blog.
