10 tips on how to win an Annual

1. Enter the correct category

With so many platforms, outlets and disciplines in the modern media landscape it can be confusing to define a piece of work or put it into a category. Look at the previous winners and shortlisted entries in last year’s book for reference, read the entry criteria under each section carefully. If you feel a project covers two categories, why not enter both for a better chance of success?

2. Stick to the brief/word count

The entry criteria are there for a reason and you’d be surprised how many people misread or disregard important instructions that could influence the judges’ decisions. Stick to the word count, enter information in the right sections and stick to what’s being asked of you with concise copy that’s to the point.

3. Get input from your wider team

When it comes to writing your award entries, be sure to consult your wider internal team. Other opinions can make a difference and help craft and important details to your story. Someone might remember something vital that you could have left out or on the other hand could disagree with how you’ve presented something in the entry. A second, third and fourth opinion can never be bad, especially if they are from different departments within your company.

4. Shout about the results

It’s all well and good presenting your shiny campaign which everyone thought was amazing but aside from the back patting, did it achieve what it set out to in the brief? There isn’t a jury member out there that won’t skim down to the results section on your entry form so be sure to maximise the results your project gained for the client.

5. Don’t leave it to the last minute

Uploading assets and entries is a straightforward process but sometimes there can be snags such as files being too large, or payment cards not being accepted. Make sure you leave enough time to enter by the February 1 deadline, especially if you have multiple entries to submit.

6. Get testimonials

Seek out your contacts and peers and get them to say how great you are. Back up everything you’re saying in the rest of your entry with evidence and quotes from people you worked with on your project. Client testimonials are especially valued can make the difference.

7. Shout about your PR

Has the work won any other awards or been covered in the trade press? Now’s the time to mention that. The industry loves talking about itself and everyone knows everyone so there’s credence in being recognised and appreciated by others in the bubble.

8. Enter the right assets

The judges don’t want to see pixelated images or corrupted case study videos. Make sure you gather the best supporting material to give your work the best chance of standing out among the competition. This also comes in handy when Creativepool publishes the shortlists and winners.

9. Look at last year’s book

Last year’s Annual was distributed to creatives, agencies and chief marketing officers across the globe and presents an excellent selection of the best campaigns, individuals and companies that shone in 2018. Flick through the pages and get inspired about what you can achieve by being inducted into the class of 2019.

10. Download the entry pack

Hopefully the previous nine points will get you on your way to winning and being listed in this year’s publication but if you haven’t downloaded the Annual 2019 entry pack yet, now’s the time to do so. It offers vital information and criteria on submitting and is an essential read for entrants.
