Moduflex
Designed and developed a suite of modern office furniture for a local manufacturer with a particular focus on improving the office environment. This gave me the opportunity to work with a client to a deadline, understand the constraints in manufacturing by working to the capabilities of existing machinery and to a strict budget. It also gave me an insight in to how the work environment has a significant impact on productivity and how the right design can create energy in the workspace.
Motivation
I was part of a team that developed a method of mass manufacturing wheelchairs for a charity operating in 3rd world countries. The unique feature was an easy way of taking a cheaply manufactured chair and having it fitted on a bespoke basis by unskilled labour using simple air inflation technology. It addition to the technical challenges we overcame it brought into sharp relief the need for design to be made available to solve problems for those of extremely limited means.
Hydro coaster
The client brief was to develop for the NHS a method of measuring liquid consumption without the need for staff intervention. I developed a reusable coaster containing a force sensitive resistor which measured liquid consumption and recorded the daily intake. It also contained a warning mechanism to remind patients when more liquid should be taken. Discussions are ongoing between the client and the NHS.
