The worst thing about being in the creative industry

And 7 ways to deal with it

When you chat to people they will invariably discover that you are in the creative industry. There’s one moment that makes my heart sink…

When they wave their new business card under your nose and ask “What do you think of our new logo?” with a look of pride on their faces combined with expectation that you’ll be impressed.

Invariably the logo is boring, but you’ve been put in a corner. Tell the truth and you look cruel and heartless (they might even think its sour grapes that you didn’t do it). So how to get through this awkward moment and say something nice when you have nothing nice to say? Here's 7 ideas of things you could say...

1) "It’s on a different level”

2) “You guys must’ve worked really hard on that”

3) "what an achievement”

4) If it’s a young company:  “it’s really fresh and energetic”

5) If it’s an old company: “shows incredible maturity and heritage”

6) Makes no sense at all: “it’s subconsciously suggestive"

7) “whoa!"

And finally, if that doesn’t stop them, just turn it back onto them and ask them to 'talk you through the thought process behind it'
