About me
Stewart has been a Printmaker for over 30 years, & was recently given the top accolade in the 2024 Creativepool Awards Art section. He was selected for the 16th Graphica Creativa Print Triennale, where the Jyväskylä Art Museum acquired his work from the exhibition in 2023. He also has works in the V&A Museum print collection, he has been selected for all 6 of the most recent editions of The Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, with recent appearances at both the RA Summer Show & the National Original Print Show, winning the Great Art Prize at the latter in 2018 for 'Alcala'.
He is continuing onwards with his Tree Portraits series from his Dartmouth studio, which started over 4 years ago in London, before leaving for Devon in late 2020. Initially inspired by the street trees of his neighbourhood, these moved outwards to the parks and the wilds nearby, quickly becoming a conversation about our lack of connectivity with the natural world. There are now well over 300 monoprints in this collection.
In the past 12 months, he has created large-scale Joshua Trees from the Mojave National Preserve that were destroyed by the Cima Dome wildfire of 2020; prints of deciduous trees from protected areas, including 'The Old Man of Calke', archival prints of which have raised over £3,500 for The Woodland Trust; and also those from the banks of the Danube in Slovakia, that were photographed for him by fellow artist Eva Boda.
This series will continue to help raise awareness for protecting our environment, including donating prints for various progressive conservation/rewilding fundraisers in the UK & USA.
Stewart previously was a keyholder at East London Printmakers for over a decade, where he was Project Leader of the Mile End - Copperfield Road Studio Build for their successful move from London Fields—during his time there, he worked exclusively in screenprint, simultaneously working as a media professional in the City.
After graduating in Fine Art at Farnham in 1994 he joined Artichoke Print Workshop, where he specialised in Photoetching .
