About me

I graduated from the Department of Media BA (Hons) Digital Media course at the Broadstairs Campus in 2008. During my time as a student at the University I became familiar with both the Canterbury and Broadstairs campuses, and have built good working relationships with staff. I contributed to the Universitys Aimhigher programme and assisted at a number of open days, where I taught prospective students about high-end digital media software. I have found that I really enjoy the teaching process and find communicating and supporting people hugely rewarding. I am personally involved in media production as a practising artist, filmmaker and keen photographer. I make sure that I keep up to date with the latest technological advancements, which help me to realise my creative output.I have a sound knowledge of lots of production software and generally find it relatively easy to learn new programmes; Im keen to learn about new software, hardware and practice to obtain professional qualifications if required. These skills include;Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, DVD Studio Pro, Adobe Flash, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe InDesign, Digital SLR Cameras, Mini DV Cameras,Lighting and Sound equipment.I have a strong working awareness of Apple Mac and PC platforms, and am keen to develop my technical and operating system support skills. Before my degree course I previously studied Photography and Media at A Level. While enrolled on this course I worked on producing a variety of projects including, sketchbooks, magazines, and films. I believe knowledge of media theory and theorists, such as Lev Manovich can greatly aid the inspiration for project ideas. I am also very fascinated with the world of avant-garde film and directors such as Len Lye, Stan Brackage and Kenneth Anger. As well as participating in media related tasks on an educational level, I have taken my interest outside of academic projects to develop new and existing skills. I think my greatest success has to be creating a short film, for the 2 Days Later Film Competition. The rules for this competition state that you have 48 hours to plan shoot and edit your film. Teamwork is a key feature for this project; the ability to work independently when required, but to work as a team when skill sets or scale of production dictate. In addition, working under pressure commands swift analytical thinking, for example on the first day of shooting we encountered a problem with the JVC GY-DV 500 camera we were using. We decided to shoot some test shots of our location, but the footage from the camera was consistently out of focus. We tried to rectify the problem, but we were unsuccessful. As it was the weekend we could not get any assistance from the departmental technicians. I used the Internet to find a digital manual for the camera, which discussed back focus in some detail, which ultimately was the route of our problem. I printed out a Siemens chart and manually reset the focus
