About me
As a young boy I would sit in the back seat of my mother's car, look out the window, and blink as the passing landscape and the things within it - the sky, clouds, trees, telegraph poles - formed compositions. Later in life I realised I was making images in my mind, and I became drawn to photography.
I've always been interested in dreams, thoughts, and experiences, particularly those heightened by the drama of emotions. I would look at famous paintings and be awed by how they kept me engaged. This long-held fascination is at the root of my passion for photography, which stems from my desire to create a mood or a character, and to move the viewer to feel something.
My father was an actor, and I watched him play with character, manipulating his talent to achieve an emotive performance. And having worked in the film industry for many years - capturing amazing actors playing their roles while I learned from some of the world's best cinematographers - I know how to use light to create an affecting image.
In my own art practice I've always challenged myself to combine elements of character and atmosphere through lighting, and I take this approach with everything I photograph, from people and objects to flowers and other natural phenomena.
Being a photographer has enabled me to express ideas that embrace beauty, storytelling, and humanity. As a result, I'd like to think that my work elicits sensations and emotions from the people who view it.
