About me

I believe my fascination with pathology, in combination with the genuine thrill I consistently get from answering questions, is what drives me to learn more. Scientific journalism is not a career path to be taken lightly, but owing to a highly disciplined, organized and mature work ethic I believe I am capable of coping with the technical demands of working in a professional environment, and can firmly commit to anything I want to achieve. I particularly enjoy any opportunity to communicate novel research findings to an audience.

My thesis, as well as giving me a further insight into neural development at a molecular level, gave me a chance to work independently and experiment outside the confines of a lecture theatre. I was able to conduct my own research using techniques such as hippocampal dissection, neuronal cell culture, genotyping, and immunohistochemistry to generate meaningful, significant data. I also have experience with qPCR and rt-PCR protocols in addition to PCR primer design. As a result, I can perform efficiently, effectively and confidently in a professional or laboratory setting. I was taught to adapt to any challenges that presented themselves, in addition to being authoritative and decisive when the situation merits. I am capable managing my own time effectively and producing the desired results according to deadlines, even when this requires me to work beyond what is normally expected.

My postgraduate course also encouraged the use of seminars and regular lab meetings; as such I'm able to articulate and convey ideas in a coherent manner to patients and peers, as well as collaborate with others in a team. My previous employment has afforded me the opportunity to meet people from wildly varying backgrounds. As such I have come to relish interacting with others, and am able to tailor how I communicate information to a specific audience.

Outside of science, I enjoy having a creative outlet; I am a passionate musician and have performed live at many venues in Bristol and London, extending to aextending to a self-released EP. During the years between my studies I was fortunate to travel extensively and have volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary in Brazil and at the Komodo National Park in Indonesia, in addition to climbing Villarica volcano in Chile. I also enjoy sport, and at school was part of the athletics, tennis and squash teams.

Postgraduate study has only given me a glimpse into the applications of natural science and I want to know more. I cannot imagine a better focus for my interest and enthusiasm than medical writing. It is my hope that this opportunity will allow me to demonstrate my passion for reporting research and my enduring interest in natural sciences, and ultimately give me the chance to marry my passion for creative, thoughtful writing with my interest in pioneering scientific developments.
