‘Digital Works’ is a collection of inspirational, creative books which showcases the different techniques possible when using either White, Neon, Spot UV, Foil, Metallic or a combination, alongside digital CMYK on the technologically advanced printing press from Ricoh.

The concept for these books was focused on curating images from celebrated photographers, illustrators and artists to convey the mix of possibilities. Featuring Brad Wilson, Quentin Monge, Jessica Hische, Paul Thurlby, Peter Horridge, Bailey Sullivan, Mario Wagner – to name but a few. Each book was dedicated to a particular technique, making six books in the series, plus a guide which gives detailed instructions to each process with tips and best practices on how to set up images ready for print.

We made the images the hero of the piece, by selecting or commissioning appropriate subject matter to represent the relevant techniques featured in each book. For example the striking, pure white fur in Brad Wilson’s stunning photograph of an arctic fox, showed off the brilliant results of printing digital white on black paper, or our collaboration with letterpress studio ‘Typoretum’ – not someone you would immediately associate with digital print – but who created an artwork for the book that was then digitally foiled for use in the ‘Foil’ book to remarkable effect.

The fifth book in the series is called ‘Touch’, a Spot UV digital embossing that can be printed as part of the image to create numerous special effects, from delicate patterns to large areas of texture. Our concept uses a sequence of circular objects and designs to demonstrate the effect – always with the attention on the highest quality images – not stock images traditionally associated with print demonstrators.

This ongoing project culminated with the complete set of six books plus guidebook being finished in 2023.
