About me

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please find enclosed my application for a position in product design. In addition, I would like to add the following in support of my application.

During my time at university I was involved in a number of design projects, which included working for Legoland and Bloomberg. The project at Legoland involved developing ideas around how to improve the selling kiosks that were spread throughout the park. Initially we were given a design brief, which set out the requirements of the kiosk; it had to be fun in order to fire the imaginations of the young visitors but it also had to fulfil a functional role. My design partner and I worked hard to achieve a kiosk design that was fun, appealing to children through the use of bright colours and movable inter-locking parts, which combined gave the final product a Lego feel. In addition we addressed the functional aspect of the kiosk by keeping the employee in mind throughout the design process. This in turn would let the employee work more efficiently, ultimately increasing revenue, which was the ultimate goal for Legoland.

Bloomberg, the financial news company, commissioned the students on my design course to come up with a design idea for a relaxation/meeting area. Having seen the high-pressured working environment our design brief emphasised the need for a space, which was fun, engaging and that, could also be used as an informal meeting area. During this project I was able to experience the flow of design from the initial generation of concepts, a gradual filtering of ideas through discussion to a final idea which all members of the team were satisfied with. The final idea we went with was based on a series of icebergs. We chose that idea because we felt that it would emphasise the divide between the working spaces and the relaxing spaces. This divide was further enhanced with the use of material, which was soft and cold to the touch. As opposed to the working areas which were hot and used materials of a harder nature. Furthermore we chose the iceberg scene because the colour white was absent from all the working areas. We also felt that it was important for a person to physically feel the change as they walked from the work areas into our relaxing space. This was achieved by changing the texture of the floor. We used clear rubber filled with polystyrene balls, which had the result of crunching when anyone walked over it. Therefore an individual on three levels, sight, sound and touch picked up the change from the working area to the relaxation area.

I believe that I have a great deal to bring to your company. I understand and thoroughly enjoy the design process. I enjoy working as part of a team, I can also work as an individual organising my time to ensure that my work meets the deadline. I am adaptable, enthusiastic and self motivated, I am eagerly looking forward to starting my career in product design
