About me

Personal statement.

Woven Textiles has given me an understanding of basic hand weaving which is practiced by every nation and culture. I have learnt traditional weaving techniques and a concept of weaving that will never change. The skills I have gained inspired me to enter the design. I feel techniques and textiles from the past should not be forgotten.

From Art Foundation, textiles were my main passion and enthusiasm. The foundation course taught me to have a good eye for colour; which is one of my strengths. This artistic background introduced me to the manipulation of materials, taking risks with my work and learning embroidery techniques, along with confidently using the sewing machine..

While being at Loughborough University I was awarded 2nd prize in the Bradford Textile Society Design Competition. The category entered was woven textile for a fashion item. My final Project of woven textiles was chosen to exhibit at New Designer London 2006. Loughborough University won a prize for the best stand.

The degree course I have just completed in woven textiles has equipped me with a good practical grounding in weave; the course taught how to dye the warp and weft of various fabrics, to the desired colour and shade. I have experience in setting up a loom learning how to weave and weaving various patterns. I have specific practical knowledge in woven textiles, manual dexterity combined with a feel for fabrics and a desire to learn. Within my group of woven textiles in the studio we worked as a team. Fabric and design ideas were exchanged, help setting up the looms and problem solving of looms and fabric were all shared and discussed. The lectures provided me with a familiarity of historical textiles and enabled me to write clearly in relation to art and design.

My dissertation covered 19th century classical design. As part of my research I went to the V and A textile archives which allowed me to take photographs. The samples were Owen Jones, Bruce James Talbert and Edward William Godwin, these were analysed and described. This research made me more aware of the importance of design. I felt these are important artefacts and wanted to know how to get into the industry of design.

I feel my enthusiasm, current skills and knowledge will be relevant in the indesign industry. I am a committed and determined person and feel designing will a fulfilling and enjoyable career to take.
