ABOUT

Insight
Hurricanes aren’t just wind and rain — they’re about how quickly things can spiral out of control. Homeowners need more than just coverage; they need confidence, guidance, and a clear plan to weather the storm.

Idea
The Calm in the Storm is a video featuring a Co-operators representative inside a hurricane simulator, showing five escalating storm stages and how simple, expert-backed steps keep homes safe.

Execution
While the storm rages, our ‘strapped-in’ representative stays focused, delivering an infomercial-style pitch on hurricane preparedness. Papers fly, hair whips in the wind, water drenches them, desks topple, and even the roof seems to lift. Through it all, they continue to show how simple measures, like hurricane straps, reinforced shingles, and sump pumps, can help homeowners protect their homes and weather the storm.

The Film Craft:

Insurance advertising often leans on aftermath. We were more interested in tension before impact.

As extreme weather events continue to reshape the Canadian landscape, the challenge became how to communicate preparedness without falling into familiar visual language. Rather than dramatizing destruction, the film places composure at the centre of chaos — turning a practical insurance message into a controlled cinematic experiment.

The entire piece was built around escalation.

What begins as an ordinary office slowly reveals itself to be something far more engineered: a storm-testing environment where weather, light, atmosphere, and pressure intensify in calibrated stages around a completely unshaken advisor. The concept demanded restraint. Every creative decision needed to support the same central idea — calm under pressure.

To achieve that authenticity, the production relied heavily on practical execution. The film was shot inside a real storm simulation facility, allowing wind, particulate, moisture, and environmental interaction to behave naturally in-camera. Rather than overwhelming the frame with visual effects, the intention was to create a tactile physicality the audience could instinctively feel.

The final result transforms a straightforward product demonstration into an exercise in cinematic tension and control. A film where every technical choice, from camera behaviour to environmental design, einforces a singular emotional idea: preparation is what allows calm to exist inside chaos.
