MyNolla Espoo

ABOUT

Concept:
Power strips are a 10 billion USD market globally. Yet, it is impossible to find one that would fit into the interior of your home. We wanted to create a power strip that takes the user experience to a new level, fits any interior and brings premium Scandinavian design into power strips.

Execution: We had 3 main themes for the product design process: Sustainability, Design and Experience. We understand our responsibility as a designer of new products and wanted to create a product that lasts. Unlike other power strips, MyNolla Strip is designed to be fully repairable and any of its components can be easily changed to make it last time. The top sheet was designed to be changeable to allow users to change the appearance of the product in case their interior changes and prolong its lifetime. Top sheets are attached with magnets to allow a tool-free change of design. Nothing is permanently fixed that enables easier recycling and reuse of components. Production happens in EU to allow a better control of the supply chain and lower the CO2 footprint of the logistics.

With design, we aimed to provide a timeless design that will seamlessly fit into any interior. And we wanted to build on top the Scandinavian/Finnish Design heritage with a close relation to nature. Thus we wanted to bring natural material options for the power strip and design it in a way that same product can be equipped with different surface materials. We started with wooden top sheets and later are introducing other natural materials such as slate. The possibilities for further designs are endless. Instead of trying to hide a power strip behind a piece of furniture, MyNolla Strip will be the item to complete the interior.

For the experience, we wanted to set aside how power strips have always been done and really looked at the users and use cases of power strips. We wanted to provide options to make the product more personal by allowing different designs and making it easy for users to change them. The design was made repairable so there's no need to throw out otherwise perfectly fine power strip if a dog chews on the power cable. And we made the product future-proof by designing integrated solution for fixing methods, such as hardware for wall-mounting and desk integration.

Results: As a result, MyNolla Strip is a product that fits into any interior, both in homes and offices. It is also a product that interior designers have been dying to get to solve the issues of almost any space needing electricity. MyNolla Strip goes beyond industry standards in the recyclability and repairability of electrical devices to lower the lifetime impacts of a product. It is the start of a MyNolla product family setting a new standard for sustainable design power strips. It was selected by Alberto Alessi as the "Best Concept" of Habitare design fair and awarded with the European Product Design Award in 2021. It also carries "Design from Finland" mark as a proof for responsibility and focus on the customer experience in the design process. MyNolla Strip is launched in July 2022 through MyNolla's own online store and selected design retailers.

MyNolla Strip is an example of what can happen when designers outside a traditional industry come and innovate the field.
