From time to time significant changes happen in the world of photography. Change for the essence of the word, for taking away the comfort of what we control, causes fear in some.
It is said that Henry Ford once said "Paint it any color you want, as long as it's black" - about the proposal to change the colors of the cars he manufactured, always black.
The photograph was only in black and white. I know terrible stories about when color photography became possible.
Then came cameras with chips that provided autofocus and other automatic adjustments previously only done by hand. I witnessed this, several colleagues saying that “a photographer who is a photographer does not do automatic focus”.
Digital cameras arrived and resistance from some who said “this does not have the quality of negatives or chrome films”.
Photos started to be produced by cell phones and everyone knows the rest of the story. Endless evolution.
The latest fear in the photographic world is called AI - Artificial Intelligence.
Like everything new, nobody knows where this is going yet.
There is also a good debate whether this is photography or not, as these are images of things and people that do not exist, produced without the use of a camera. Passions make the defense on both sides.
I've been studying this in depth and I've gotten some interesting results.
For the first time I am producing images without using a camera.
It has a strange feeling, a doubt of authorship, since the images are generated from what I say, not what I do.
On the other hand, there is the security that I am the one who describes exactly how the images will be. “Teaching” the AI what light I want, which lens, what era the clothes will be, who the characters are, expressions, colors, settings, etc. If a word is changed in my description, the image produced is another.
Therefore, a sense of authorship can be derived from this.
I've seen pros demonize AI, the flaws that actually exist, especially hands that are generally not well made.
It must be remembered that this is just beginning and like everything else, there will be a natural evolution and improvement.
Cell phones took pictures with 4 megapixels. They already have more than 50.
My studies are about how AI can be incorporated into my work, as change is inevitable.
