ABOUT

I sometimes struggle to put into words how I feel about life as a woman today. It kinda makes me feel like with each step forward someone somewhere is forced to take a step back. Like, there needs to be a balance and if we make strides forwards then someone needs to take equal steps back to compensate.

Yes, it's been a few years since women were throwing themselves under horses to highlight their desire for suffrage, but have we moved any further forward in reality?

We still don't have full autonomy over our bodies. We are not paid the same as men. We are not safe to wear what we want. To go where we want. To do what we want... In fact our rights in these areas seem to be getting eroded with each coming year.

Some countries are better than others, but someone better than me said none of us are free until we are all free.

We have days like international Women's Day where we celebrate the divine female. We think about the trailblazers that have gone before us and listen to men bleating on about when is International Men's Day, because it's not like every day is International Men's Day...

It was IWD this year that got me drawing this piece. Celebration of women is wonderful, necessary even, but if you only do it on one day a year does it really count? If you're running an event for IWD with an all male panel, does that really count? If you don't have gender equality on your board but shout the team donuts to show they're appreciated, does it really count?

I guess my feelings are too long to share here but my truth is that IWD is good but we are a long long way from where we need to be before we can say we are truly equal...
