ABOUT

Transferring the expert knowledge of one, to an audience of thousands.

The Mission
Netflix doesn’t need any introduction, so I’ll keep it short! They’re the world’s leading streaming entertainment service with 204 million members in over 190 countries. As well as showcasing content they also create it via their production company, which employs over 12 thousand people globally, spending an estimated $17bn a year making tv shows and films.

Because of this Inclusion and Diversity are vital for them to ensure their members and employees feel seen and represented in front of as well as behind the camera.

But Inclusion and Diversity is a complex and nuanced field that only the most experienced and knowledgeable are qualified to teach. This creates a bottleneck of learning which isn’t scalable, and slows down the speed at which employees can be taught about the subject.

Our mission: to translate the knowledge and expertise of Netflix’s Inclusion and Diversity team into digestible and engaging content, so that all 12,000 Netflix employees around the world can have the same in-depth understanding of this vital subject.

Why Choose Animation As the Vehicle?
There are several reasons why animation is the perfect medium for this challenge.
1. It can entertain while educating;
2. If posted online there is no limit to the size of the audience it can reach;
3. Being highly visual and reliant on metaphors, it can easily cross the language barrier and remain inclusive of all nationalities.

“The concepts were really heavy and animation can explain them in a way that people can get their heads around. It also allows for playfulness and a little bit of humour. Animation can take things that feel scary to some folks or big and lofty concepts, and bring them down to a more human level.”

Why Did Netflix Choose Us?
Netflix thought our style would be perfect for this project, and knew we were “chill”. This was important to them as the project would need a lot of back and forth with them to define and carve out these concepts. There were some reservations around the time difference with us being in the UK and them LA, but in the end, it wasn’t an issue, as we both made sure to hyper-communicate.

The Outcome
First of all, we worked with Netflix and their Inclusion and Diversity team to create five scripts based on the key aspects of what needed to be communicated. We then developed these five scripts into thirty minutes of animation, to be used as learning assets and watched by all Netflix employees around the world.

The Impact
The animations have created a baseline of knowledge for all members of staff, which has created a positive shift in the conversations people can have around a sensitive but vital subject. This moves Netflix a step closer to its goal of creating a truly inclusive workplace.

“Easy Animal are great creative collaborators. Even with subject matter that can be somewhat dry and heavy, they’re great at coming up with solutions. They’re clear and honest about what is and isn’t possible in the budget. We would sing their praises to strangers!”
