ABOUT
The Callisto Protocol project: 3D screens at Times Square and Piccadilly stands out for its creative and innovative design, and the use of new technology, 5D projection, in the entertainment industry.
The goal of the experience was to attract the attention of passersby to the story and universe of the video game, while surprising them and capturing their imagination. Promotion through the experience allowed for the generation of strong emotions, becoming a natural and transparent extension of a game's identity.
From the beginning of the project, it was known that two screens of different sizes and perspectives would be used, 44.22m x 17.4m in London, and a second enormous screen of 97.31m x 23.67m in New York. This meant that everything had to be created in duplicate, and designed according to two different illusion points. The scene has many elements simultaneously on screen, including prisoners, zombies, a cage, and an explosion, which required careful and thoughtful expertise. Being based in Montreal, the team was unable to familiarize themselves with the two locations, so a 3D scene of the city was filmed using a 3D camera. Everything was created using computer-generated imagery (CGI). Shortly before installation, scenes were previewed using VR headsets. The entire project was designed in less than three months.
Creating an illusion on two different screens presented a significant challenge. The team needed to control everything in the environment and elements to ensure the quality of the illusion. This is why CGI was used for the entire project, and the quality of the 3D was tested using VR headsets.
