ABOUT

The Makers of Melton is a seasonal portrait series, shot in the run-up to Christmas 2016, celebrating some of the diversity of independent makers and producers in the Melton area of Leicestershire.

Background
Melton Mowbray has a rich food production heritage, it is recognised as the Rural Capital for Food in the UK and with a range of businesses represented, this personal series sought to highlight and celebrate some of the variety that now exists in the area.

Concept
The series showcases silversmiths, bakers, personalised giftware makers, florists, cheese makers and butchers. Some businesses have recently started whilst others are in their 3rd generation but what links them together is a shared commitment to craftsmanship and a specialist approach to their work. Something that has been recognised by the range of awards some of the businesses have received.

Execution
The portraits were all shot in my studio, with each business owner holding an example of their work. I wanted the subjects to feel as comfortable and empowered as possible so that their natural authenticity and passion could shine through. What was wonderful was that each person came as themselves, some literally straight from finishing a piece of work and the pride and warmth that emanates from them is a true reflection of themselves.

Results
The project received local press and regional radio coverage from the BBC. A radio studio interview with myself was held on BBC Leicester, whilst a simultaneous field reporter was live with two of the businesses featured. It was a well received piece that aired between Christmas and New Year, 2016.
