ABOUT

The Brief
We have been working with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to support a new tree planting campaign across the region, with a key aim being to achieve Mayor Oliver Coppard’s vision to plant 1.4 million trees in South Yorkshire, one for every resident in the SYMCA territory.

They needed our help to develop a new name, identity, narrative, design system and multiple brand assets and templates for promoting the campaign. They needed the campaign to encourage participation from groups like planting partners e.g. South Yorkshire Woodlands Trust and community partners like The Conservation Volunteers as well as schools, colleges, residents’ groups, and special interest groups in the region.

Concept
Following research into the region and taking the aim of the campaign into account, we developed the campaign name ‘A Tree for Everyone’ to encompass its true meaning and the campaign’s long-lasting vision.

We also produced the campaign line ‘The Mayor’s Million Trees’, which links the campaign back to the Mayor while also making sure residents of the region recognise its collective impact.

It was important to us that all work we developed tied back to the four local authorities that make up the region, so our explorative process also included looking at local plant species and talking to partners that had already signed on to be a part of the project.

Execution
Out of our findings, we developed a logo mark, brand assets, guidelines and templates for the team to edit themselves, as well as bespoke illustrations and graphic devices that reflect the biodiversity of the SYMCA area.

Artwork has also been developed for the campaign and event assets, and we have also supported the campaign launch event. We have also developed assets and support materials for an initial 30,000 trees being given away to community groups to kick start the campaign.

We have also developed a written vision for the programme, and created a marketing and communication strategy to support the campaign.

Results
Materials developed for the campaign are already in circulation, ranging from print materials such as feather flags to digital assets like a web page and social media assets. An increase in partner support and public buy-in has also been reported by the SYMCA team.
