About me

I have recently finished a Masters degree in Creative Writing at Nottingham Trent University, which I passed with a commendation, and before that I gained a 2:1 undergraduate degree from the same university in English Literature with Social Theory. In these courses I learnt to edit and give constructive criticism on other people's writing, as well as articulating my own writing skills. I was asked by a tutor to write a letter for prospective students, detailing my experiences within the course and extra-curricular opportunities that I took in the university.

While studying for the MA I wrote music and film journalism pieces for the university magazine The Platform, which also honed my editing skills as there would often be constrictive word limits for pieces, so I had to learn to write in a condensed and disciplined form. Often I would work to deadlines, for instance submitting pieces within a couple of hours after seeing a gig, so this meant I had to learn to write under pressure.

In 2006 I undertook work experience with the Nottingham based Publishing firm Shoestring Press. I assisted on the publication of two books, one a work of fiction by Michael Wilding, the other a biography of Jean Rhys by Alexis Lykiard. I proof-read and gave suggestions for changes, plus I liaised between the authors and printers to determine printing costs and dates when printing could commence. I also helped with marketing ideas, finding ways to promote the books with a limited budget.
