About me
As well as being my job, technical illustration is also my hobby. Having always wanted to draw it seemed logical that I should work as an artist in some way or another. As cars fascinated me, especially racing cars, technical illustration seemed the only way to go.
In 1975 I started work with TIA studios producing illustrations for workshop manuals for the Ford Motor Company. In the 80's I went freelance, my first commission being illustrations for the weekly part works Car Fix It. This lead to my working for Quarto publishing in London working on a variety of books.
In 1988 I moved to South Africa where I produced illustrations for Honda depicting Honda's involvement in F1. Michael Schumacher's and Nigel Mansell's sponsors, Camel, commissioned me to produce a series of artworks showing their cars. I also produced an illustration of Ayrton Senna's McLaren which was used in a poster calendar, as well a illustrations for various motoring publications.
Returning to the UK in 1997 and taking up a position producing illustrations for Ford again! During this time I also produced a cutaway of the land speed record car, Thrust SSC, and a cutaway of Richard Brown's rocket bike, Mach 3 Challenger.
Ford commissioned me to produce a ghosted view of the Ford Focus highlighting the components that were used to make the musical instruments for the Ford orchestra.
Another subject that fascinates me is the land speed record, the Bluebirds of the Campbell's in particular, especially the Bluebird K7 of Donald Campbell. His boat, or should I say Hydroplane, always held a fascination for me. When I heard that it was being raised in the hope of restoring it I could not resist the urge to produce a cutaway.
In 2014 my artwork of Campbell's machines CN7 and K7 was used for a wine label in Australia to commemorate Campbell's world land and water speed records of 1964.
In 2016 I worked on David de Lara's book, 'Donald Campbell 300+ A Speed Odyssey' producing the illustrations and diagrams, as well as my cutaway of the iconic Lotus 79 appearing in a Haynes manual.
Over the years I have worked with McLaren, Lotus, Williams, Jordan and Midland F1 teams.
Thanks to the History Press, this year (2021) my life long ambition to have an F1 book published was finally realised, titled 'Grand Prix's Winning Colours', it traces every winning car from the first championship race in 1950 to the 70th anniversary race in 2020. Based on the success of this book, its now followed by my second book 'Le Mans Winning Colours' tracing the first 100 years of the 24 hour race. I have just produced a 40 page book on the Bluebird K7 for the Ruskin Museum where the K7 is housed, I'm also working on my 3rd book.
