In August 2011 I was offered a heaven-sent opportunity to show some of the photographic skills I had been patiently developing over the previous six years or so. Jim Vintner, a close friend of my father, invited myself and my partner , Michelle, to join his family on their powerful RIB to follow the start of the Fastnet Race. With Jim V at the helm, we belted after the big multihulls such as Veolia and Banque Populaire, flying down the Solent at 30+ knots. I managed to get some good close up shots of all of them, using the Canon EOS 300D camera I had then and a good zoom lens. Using fast shutter speeds and manual focus, I was able to get vibrant, pin-sharp images of the action. These generated a very positive response from friends and a pro Photographer, who said that my photographs were good enough to sell. So I created my website www. marinelens.co.uk, which went “live” in October 2011. I have been trying hard to get another “proper” job for a long time, so I now put my time to very good use, undertaking commissions for private boat-owners, promoting my business and preparing for the Diploma in Photography. My partner bought me a new Canon EOS 550D and a new zoom lens, excellent kit! I can't wait for the new season to start - I'll be back out on the water with my camera, capturing all the action in the Solent. I now live near Bursledon, but I still have very strong connections with the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, where I lived for many years . The website gives me the chance to show my favourite places along this stretch of coastline as well as the yachts racing down the Solent.
