Marek's work
About Marek
I was elected as VP Communications and Media in 2004, and was successfully re-elected in 2005. My main priorities were to develop the student newspaper ' Universe', the student radio station 'Crush' and the union website.
At the start of my term I redesigned the logo for universe to be more eye-catching resulting in more papers 'flying of the shelf'. In addition to that I redesigned the style of the paper, increasing standard page columns to odd numbers as this creates a more pleasing affect on the eye. I also changed the standard font used to serif font, which is much easier to read on printed publications. Overall I believe that over the last 22 months 'Universe' has become cleaner, well laid out and professional. Student involvement has increased in the paper and as a result students await the papers release every month.
As I started my first term my predecessor told me that if I were to make universe financially self-sufficient I would be known as a legend. This in combination with increasing our advertising rates has lead to a student newspaper which brought in over £5000 revenue after my first year and I fully intend to do better this year.
Most recently I have established a sister magazine for students on one of our satellite campuses. I love working on all aspects of print, writing articles, layout, checking for accuracy and liable, bringing in the money and searching out new ways of developing media.
