About us

Macmillan has come a long way since Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Scottish Isle of Arran, began publishing books in 1843. They made their mark on the literary world by publishing world-famous authors such as Carroll, Hardy, Kipling and Tennyson. They were driven by learning and discovery – the same things that drive us today.

In the early years of Macmillan, discoveries were shared during gatherings, known as ‘Tobacco Parliaments’, at Alexander Macmillan’s home in London. Some of the greatest minds of the time, including scientists, writers and artists, regularly sat down and discussed ideas and possibilities for change. Just one idea to emerge from the smoke was Macmillan’s Magazine, precursor to Nature, which is our biggest-selling and most famous publication.
